Kuva: Museovirasto

The maintenance of archaeological sites in Finland is the responsibility of the National Board of Antiquities. Its designated task is to study and develop methods of maintaining the archaeological heritage and to provide expert and information services in support of maintenance interests.

The maintenance of the archaeological heritage involves the care and maintenance of archaeological sites and their environment, as well as the planning and organization of the use of the site areas. Its purpose is to bring out the elements of culture history in the contemporary landscape, and to ensure their preservation in the future. Managed and well cared-for archaeological sites help heighten the identity of the local population and strengthen their commitment to their home region.

The maintenance of archaeological sites began in the 19th century in the spirit of National Romanticism. The aim of the maintenance was to boost national self esteem, and it involved, in particular, monumental sites, such as ruined castles.  The 1950s marked a turning point in the structure of agriculture. The use of natural meadows came to an end, old grazing land grew over, and forest took over wastelands. In the process, many archaeological sites were covered by vegetation. With the increase of environmental awareness among the population, demands for the organization of the care and maintenance of archaeological sites began to be heard. The National Board of Antiquities has been engaged in the systematic care and maintenance of sites since 1988.
