The Archipelago Sea in the Middle Ages

When it comes to the history of the Middle Ages in Finland, the surroundings of the medieval wreck in Nauvo make a fascinating research area. The researchers of the Maritime Archaeology Unit are in charge of the investigations of the wreck site but they co-operate with researchers form different branches of science. In addition to archaeological finds, written material from the Middle Ages as well as the onomastic research of the archipelago help us to learn about the settlement and source of livelihood of the area. Onomastics (the study of names and naming practices) offers hints about the linguistic origin and practices of the people who used the area in different times. Of great help are also the reconstruction of shore displacement and the study of natural landscape development.
