The Vrouw Maria Underwater project
The special objective of the Vrouw Maria Underwater project, carried out in 2009–2012, was to improve the accessibility of the wreck. The project showed that new information on the wreck can also be generated without raising it from the seabed. Accessibility was increased by means of a fieldwork blog and a virtual simulation, and the digitisation of the artefacts raised from the wreck. Recreational diving is not permitted at the wreck of Vrouw Maria, because it is located in a specially restricted zone in Finland's Archipelago National Park and is also surrounded by a protected area under the Finnish Antiquities Act.
From July 2015, the virtual simulation of Vrouw Maria has been available in the main exhibition of the Maritime Museum of Finland, in the Maritime Centre Vellamo, in Kotka.
