VAINIONMÄKI IN LAITILA - A Merovingian Period Cemetery

Editor Paula Purhonen
1996, 221 p., hardback, ISBN 915-616-008-5, EUR 1,00 (inclusive VAT)

The Merovingian Period cremation cemetery of Vainionmäki in Laitila was discovered in 1985, when "old-looking weapons" were found in a moraine hill surrounded by fields. The first archaeological inspection revealed the existence of an exceptional archaeological site. The entire cemetery was excavated in 1986 - 1994. The significance of the material proved even greater than expected. The Vainionmäki burials date from the 7th and 8th centuries A.D. The cemetery appears to have belonged to a single farm or family. The artefacts and burials provide information on the community's economy, social relations, and outside contacts, but also reflect the religious beliefs and Weltanschauung during one important transition period of the Iron Age.
