The Ethnographic Prints and Photographs Archives


The Ethnographic Prints and Photographs Archives is the central public prints and photographs archives on Finnish cultural history, and one of the nation´s largest. The collections include approximately 800 000 items.They include photographs, drawings, water-colours, architectural drawings, engravings, postcards, films, videos, etc.

The material is divided into three collections:

A woman is baking. The National Board of Antiquities. The Finnish Collection represents the Finns and Finnish culture both in Finland and abroad.

Catch of Fish, Livonia. The National Board of Antiquities. The Finno-Ugric Collection represents the kindred nations of the Finns: the Olonetsians, the Finno-Ugrians in Russian Karelia, the Sámi, the Estonians, the Ingrians, etc.

Yoke of oxen, Sardinia. The National Board of Antiquities. The General Ethnographic Collection mainly consists of photographs from around the world taken by Finnish researchers and tourists, or postcards purchased.
