The Main Building

The current main building, which was designed by Adolf Gustaf Nordenskiöld and was completed in 1805, differs in architectural style from the prevailing classicism of the time and returns to the rococo examples found in Swedish design books. The building’s floor plan and shape of the roof are unique in Finland: the dwelling rooms surround the drawing-room which is two floors high and lit from the top, and the drawing-room’s rafter forms the high roof lantern.

The main building’s interior has been restored to match its 19th century style. Some of the rooms have been furnished according to photos from the early 20th century. The rest of the rooms present the history of the manor house and the scientific activities and technical achievements of the members of the Nordenskiöld family.

The Finnish state bought Alikartano Manor in 1964 with the assistance of a contribution from the Nordenskiöld family. Nordenskiölds in Sweden later donated to the museum furniture, pictures and graphic works which formerly belonged to the manor.
