Fredrik Cygnaeus was Professor of aesthetics and modern literature at the University of Helsinki. Cygnaeus also gained recognition as a statesman, historian, poet, pioneer of art and literature criticism and as an active member of numerous organisations seeking to promote Finland's national culture. Chairman of the Finnish Art Society for many years, he played a significant part in establishing a recognised status for the visual arts in Finland. He also acted as patron to contemporary artists by building up a private art collection.
