LAND OF THE SAAME
Photographs by Pekka Antikainen
16.5.2005 - 31.12.2005
In The Land of the Saame exhibition photographer Pekka Antikainen (born1960) brings into focus the people and the nature of the North. For over twenty years Antikainen has photographed the life of reindeer herdsmen and fishermen documenting the changes in the livelihood of the Saame people. The exhibition presents reindeer herding with the help of scooters and helicopters, tourism as a source of livelihood, education of the Saame youth and the gap between the nature and the globalizing world. Photos taken of the Skolt Saame people remind us of the threat that the Saame minority will be superseded.
The Land of the Saame exhibition is based on a photographic book by Antikainen with the same title, Saamenmaa - Land of the Saame (2004). It is a part of a series with two previously released works, Koillinen Tunturituuli (1994) and Viimeiset Lohitalonpojat (1998). Besides photographing Antikainen has worked as a farm hand for the reindeer herders which is revealing of his working methods. The photographer has printed and framed the photos himself.
Born in Kuopio, Pekka Antikainen lives nowadays in Inari most of the year. Antikainen studied photography at the Institute of Crafts and Applied Arts in Lahti during 1980-1983. He has had several photographic exhibitions in Finland and has participated in group shows both in the homeland and abroad.
Pekka Antikainen is a free artist. He is a founding member and chairman of the board of the photo agency Leuku. Antikainen´s photographic production can be seen on the Internet site www.leuku.fi.
The exhibition is designed by Hannele Grönlund and the lightning by Jarkko Lievonen.
