POTENTIALS - DESIGN IN THE FIELD
8.11.2006 - 4.3.2007
POTENTIALS - DESIGN IN THE FIELD project and exhibition represent different points of view on craft development and culture. The goal of the project is to increase local capacity building in the area of social design. This is the reason why the POTENTIALS process has developed into a project that is not only processing data and representing case studies but has an active engagement with the local partners and institutions in Namibia, Indonesia, Colombia and Finland. The process itself has already helped the local communities to learn more about design processes and increased their ability in craft design and marketing. The exhibition presents the products of these processes.
POTENTIALS - DESIGN IN THE FIELD started already in 2005 when the World Design Research Group members of the University of Art and Design Helsinki discussed about organizing a group exhibition that would discuss craft development and see if there would be new ways to look and evaluate development processes. The goal of the project is to increase local capacity building in the area of social design. The research group members have been involved in ongoing projects in the area of craft and design development in different locations of the world: Namibia, Finland, Indonesia and Colombia. The people involved in the project are: Paola Cabrera Viancha, Colombia, Melanie Harteveld Becker, Namibia, Adhi Nugraha, Indonesia, and from Finland, Inkeri Huhtamaa, Johanna Illman, Sanna Latva-Ranta, Satu Miettinen and Laura Pokela.
POTENTIALS - DESIGN IN THE FIELD project aims at disseminating information about craft development practices that have been tested and found successful for local income generation and at adding value to local craft production through strategic design. There is a need for practice based research that can help in policy making and development work done with craft and design development work.
The POTENTIALS project rose on its' wings and soon developed into international co-operation between institutions and organizations from different continents. The project operates in various levels. One part is the exhibition that represents and illustrates case studies. Touring exhibition has been presented in two continents: at the National Art Gallery of Namibia in Windhoek and at the Museum of Cultures in Helsinki. Second part of the project has been a design research seminar and workshop that took place at Namibia Craft Centre in the Omba gallery in February 2006. The third part of the project is the publication that presents the different craft development case studies and frames of the process.
