Editor Ildikó Lehtinen

2002, 256 pgs., ISBN 951-616-081-6, 29 € (incl. VAT)

The rugged nature of Siberia and the ways in which its arctic peoples live have fascinated Europeans since ancient times, but Finnish explorers did not begin heading for Siberia until the early ninteenth century. The Finns' special interest in the Finno-Ugrian languages and peoples has given Finnish research on Siberia its own individual flavour and made it internationally important. From M. A. Castrén onwards, researchers and explorers have been accumulating a collection of artefacts for the National Museum of Finland that tell about the life of the Siberian peoples. This book takes a look at Finnish research on Siberia, introduces the languages and cultures of its indigenous northern peoples and gives some idea of the pressures under which they live today. The book is published both in English and in Finnish.
