Gunnar Landtman was one of the first Finnish social anthropologists. He made his sole field expedition to Papua New Guinea in 1910-1912. His fieldwork fell during a period of transition when Australian colonial administration and missionary work were changing old practices. Many customs had already changed, but it was still possible to gather information on the traditional way of life and obtain artifacts. The publication is based on material collected by Landtman and illustrated by photographs taken by him. The text is in Finnish and in English.

In the disguise of an anthropologist he travelled on horseback through the borderlands of Eastern China covering the distance between Samarkand and Beijing.
