The Suomenlinna Museum

museon alakerran nteriööriä Kuva: Taina Laakkonen (2009)

Suomenlinna Museum tells the eventful history of the island fortress from the 18th century to the present day. Visitors to the museum can experience the rugged life of the fortress builders as well as the flourishing social life and entertainments of the officers of Viapori (another name for Suomenlinna which derives from its Swedish name Sveaborg). The permanent exhibition features utility articles, tools, weaponry and ammunition which have been found in Suomenlinna. The museum presents the life of the various inhabitants of the island throughout the years including Swedish soldiers, Russian merchants and Finnish civil war prisoners.

In addition, the museum also screens hourly the widescreen show, The Suomenlinna Experience, which takes the viewer on a journey through the fascinating history of the fortress.

Suomenlinna Museum is situated within the Visitor Centre on the island. The museum also presents temporary historical exhibitions.
