Bubbling Under, the Underwater Cultural Heritage at Suomenlinna
20 May 2011 - 3 March 2013
The exhibition "Bubbling Under, the Underwater Cultural Heritage at Suomenlinna" displays the history of the water area surrounding Suomenlinna. The exhibition is based on the National Board of Antiquities´ underwater survey from 2007-2010 and on artefacts collected since the 1950s. Noteworthy is the underwater cultural landscape, which for the first time can be studied with the help of a three-dimensional model. The exhibition also features music by Ona Kamu, based on underwater recordings from Suomenlinna.
Rich traces of human activities have been collected at the fortress and in its surrounding water areas since the foundation in 1748. With its special conditions the Baltic Sea has preserved all sorts of artefacts left in the sea, fron household garbage to ammunition, from shipwrecks to kick-sleds, and from bicycles to massive underwater constructions. At the exhibition are shown everyday as well as monumental parts of our cultural heritage fron the foundation of the fortress until the present day.
The exhibition "Bubbling Under, the Underwater Cultural Heritage at Suomenlinna" is suited for the whole family. The exhibition guide Näkki has his own area, where one is invited to touch, try out and get to know the conditions and history of the Baltic Sea.
