The research of the wreck in Nauvo

A church bell and ROV at the bottom of the sea. Photo: Petri Puromies (2002)Many of the ancient sites found in Finland’s territorial waters are international as to their nature. The wreck found in Nauvo is not an exception since it is definitely a part of larger Baltic maritime culture. The location of the wreck and the extremely well preserved cargo have raised international interest, and our researchers are indeed in active co-operation with foreign experts in medieval studies.

The aim of the investigations of the wreck site in Nauvo is to recreate the ship as carefully as possible and to analyse the nature and composition of its cargo. The results of the investigations will add to the knowledge of the history of the Middle Ages in Finland and in all the Baltic countries.
